Installing Firefox-2 on hardy

May 15, 2008 on 9:07 pm | In Linux, Open Source, Ubuntu | No Comments

I had the need for FF2 on my hardy box, because i wanted to test out moonlight and some websites. Installing is pretty easy as you can install it out of the repository or via the following command:

sudo apt-get install firefox-2

After you’ve installed it, create a new profile (all firefox instances should be closed) and you can then start using FF2 by entering firefox-2 on the command line, or create a new menu-item for it if you prefer that. Keep in mind that you set the correct profile.

OnairAmsterdam tour thoughts

Last friday I attended the Amsterdam meeting of the Adobe Onair Tour. It was a developers meeting and I’m writing down some of my thoughts with regards to the meeting.

So for starters, here are the things I liked:

  1. The speed of the meeting was excellent, there was no chance to get bored, which I appreciate when attending this kind of meetings
  2. Network and power was supplied and everything worked without a glitch. I guess in the coming years more and more locations will have this kind of setup, but the work put in providing everyone with these two basics is appreciated
  3. It was relatively easy to talk to the people who presented. I say relatively easy but there’s also room for improvement.
  4. The subjects where of sufficient depth
  5. There were no vendor or sponsor stands which I appreciate a lot, these mostly just tend to draw attention away from the subjects at hand, and they tend to demand longer breaks which where imho long enough

And now for the point where there could be improvement:

  1. Be prepared to stop a speaker if his story is not as good as you would expect. Monitor the number of people which leave the room, and act upon it. Nothing is more killing than a speaker that is chasing people out of the room
  2. Have some local champions present which done something awesome with air and give them credits for it. Nothing is more thrilling for developers than getting praised for their work and it keeps people involved.
  3. Let some people move around and have random chats, nothing works better to get the shy developers to give you feedback. Don’t count on everybody going to seek you out.
  4. Show some success stories, the sale of twhirl was with regards to that a godsend, show people they can actually make money using the technology.
  5. Have a small drink afterwards, its the best way to mingle with people and get to know them
  6. Most developers have a hard time selling this kind of technology to their bosses. It would be good to have a more business oriented venue on the same time so developers can take their boss along, so these will understand what this new thing is all about

All in all it was a great day and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It’s definitely something that should happen more often as it helps to see and hear the experts.
